Article Writing – Are You a Shopping Channel Presenter Or a Teacher?

What is the difference between a shopping channel and a schoolteacher? If you don’t know, then perhaps you don’t watch enough shopping channels, which is entirely understandable. Personally I find any more than five minutes of viewing and my brain starts trying to crawl out of my ears.

However, the difference between the way that presenters work on the shopping channels and your teachers attempted to impart essential knowledge about oxbow lakes and differential equations is of great relevance when thinking about article marketing. The reason is that an astonishing number of articles seem to have been written by teachers, rather than by people who could work on the shopping channel and who are attempting to sell something.

Teachers teach, shopping channel presenters sell. What are your articles for if not for selling? But the tough aspect of article writing is that of course the more successful articles teach something at the same time, otherwise they’re not articles, they’re adverts.

When it comes to article writing it’s worth stopping for a moment and thinking about how to learn from each of these fairly contrasting types of people, applying aspects of each to your writing in order to improve both the standard and the effectiveness of your marketing articles.

If you think back to your school-days, and in particular to your teachers you might remember one, or if you’re lucky two, who really made a difference. But why was this? What was it that they did that made such a difference to both your enjoyment of learning and of their lessons?

One of the factors was probably humour. We all get a bit fed up of the dull and rather beige quality of writing on the web. Articles seem often to be devoid of much humour, and yet we all seem to pay more attention to things if there’s a little humour involved. Teachers who cracked the odd joke (even if they made you groan) probably had more of your attention that those who wouldn’t know a joke if it blew up in a chemistry lab.

But successful teachers would also often include a way of learning that maximised the chance of a ‘learning moment’. The ‘Eureka’ moment when a light bulb seems to switch on in your head and you realise that you’ve just understood something, or learned something new, can be tremendously powerful. Providing both humour and the occasional learning moment in your articles can be very powerful, but on their own they may well still restrict you to being categorised as a teacher.

One of the striking features about many of the best shopping channel presenters is not that they’re trying to lecture you or teach you, but are learning with you, discovering things at the same time, being surprised, and of course highly enthusiastic about it all. Appearing highly knowledgeable is certainly valuable and beneficial, but sometimes as article writers we need to be a little less didactic and rather more human. After all, it’s humans we’re trying to reach, not teach.

How To Find Unusual Christmas Presents

Finding unusual Christmas presents can be a good way to make your gift stand out from the crowd. They show that you have put some thought into your Christmas gift rather than simply bought another DVD or sweater.

Here are some ideas that will get your mind thinking about some of the more unusual Christmas presents that you could give.

1. Adopt an animal or bird. Many zoos and wildlife parks offer this as an option. You can choose from almost any creature from a humble squirrel right the way up to whales. Look for the option of a regular newsletter to keep the gift recipient informed of the progress of their adopted animal during the year.

2. Compile an unusual Christmas present from photographs, audio files and anything else you have to hand. This takes a bit longer to create than buying a present off the shelf but has the advantage that your Christmas gift is guaranteed to be unique and will be treasured for life.

3. Give the gift of a title. You can buy titles such as Lord and Lady online and then you have the added advantage that you can address your unusual Christmas present to the “Lord” or “Lady” to build up intrigue.

4. Buy a minute in time that means something to the person receiving the present. Any special moment from any time in their life can be registered and honored with a framed certificate. This is bound to be a talking point!

5. Give an experience. Anything from driving a Formula One motor car through to “boys toys” such as JCBs and diggers or a leisurely pamper day at a spa.

Once you start thinking about unusual Christmas presents, you’re sure to find weird ideas popping into your head at all times of the day and night. Use the to-do list on your cell phone to jot them down so that you remember them!

Father’s Day – Finding The Perfect Present For Your Dad

Choosing the ideal Father’s Day present is not an easy task for most of us – if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to get something personal, something that he’ll use and remember that you bought for him – and most of all, something that isn’t socks or aftershave! Not easy, huh?

Looking at it from his point of view – it can’t be much fun getting the same kind of presents each year. But at the end of the day, all he really wants is to know that you’ve thought about what he’d like and made an effort to find a gift that he’ll appreciate.

As we all know, a good place to start is with his hobbies – but here is where it can get more interesting… Rather than buying new golf club covers (only if he’s into golf!) or some other small item that relates to his hobby – why not try this…

Find a photo in the archives of your computer that you know he has always liked – either of family, dog, garden or of him doing whatever he likes best. A good idea, if you can find one, is of him and you together.

Now there are loads of ways you can give that picture as a gift. You could print it out with a message on it, then frame it. If you can print to A4 and smaller, try to make it fit a small picture frame which could stand on his desk to remind him of all the good times you have together. If you can print bigger – a wall hanging frame might be more appropriate. Frames can be picked up in markets or small shops quite cheaply if you shop around. In either case you might consider decorating the frame with beads, string or other craft materials for a unique gift.

If he’s into computers or his mobile phone you could add your photo to his, as wallpaper. Make sure you get up early on Father’s Day to do it. But do make sure you know what you’re doing. Messing up his computer or his phone will not be an ideal way to start Father’s Day!

Another way to make that photo into a gift is to mount it on card so that it stands out as a 3D effect. The simplest way to do this is to print your photo onto photo quality paper or card. Use double sided sticky pads to mount it on another piece of card. You can decorate around the photo by sticking on pictures of other family members or some of the places he’s visited or things he’s interested in. If you’re feeling very creative, you could print your picture more than once. Then cut out smaller detail from the picture and mount them on top of the first photo to create a decoupage effect.

The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t have to be perfect – it just has to show that you care about him enough to make the effort to make something just for him.

Of course if you are really stuck – telling him you love him and giving him a hug is probably the best present in the world for any Dad on Father’s Day!
